Mount Choral

Annual Concert 18th May 2019

Karl Kenkins – “ The Armed Man  and Gabriel Fauré –  “Requiem”

The Annual concert for the Mountain Ash and District Choir is to be held at St Margaret’s Church in Mountain Ash CF45 4DA at 7pm on Saturday the 18th May. The Choir is really looking forward to performing 2 very different, but beautiful pieces:-

“The Armed Man” written by Welsh composer Karl Jenkins is a Mass which was commissioned by the Royal Armouries Museum for the Millenium celebrations. It was premiered at the Royal Albert Hall in 2000 and is essentially an anti – war piece. It is based on the Catholic Mass and words from other religious and historic sources. including the Islamic “Call to Prayer”, the Bible, Rudyard Kipling, Alfred Lord Tennyson and Sankichi Toge who survived the Hiroshima bombing.

“Requiem” was composed between 1887 and 1890 and its focus is on eternal rest and consolation.

Fauré wrote of the work “Everything I managed to entertain by way of religious illusion I put into my Requiem, which moreover, is dominated from beginning to end by a very human feeling of faith in eternal rest.”  The Requiem was performed at Fauré’s own funeral in 1924.

We will be supported by soloists Ros Evans (Soprano) and Gareth Brynmor John (Baritone) and The City of Cardiff Symphony Orchestra led by Denise Richardson.  Be sure to come and join us for what promises to be a thoroughly enjoyable evening.  Tickets cost £15, which includes a free programme. You can pay at the door on the night or contact our Ticket Officer on 07767 262458.
